ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) – A minimum of 13 people, consisting of 4 children, were killed in two different stampedes in Nigeria as large crowds collected to gather food and clothes items dispersed at annual Christmas occasions, the authorities said Saturday.
The two mishaps came days after another such stampede in Africa ´ s most populated nation, amid a growing pattern by local companies, churches and individuals to arrange charity events ahead of Christmas, as the country battles with the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.
Ten people were eliminated in the first stampede in the early hours at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, an upmarket part of the capital, Abuja, cops representative Josephine Adeh said in a declaration, adding that more than 1,000 people have actually been left from the church.
There was a crowd rise at one of the church gates, as dozens tried to get in the facilities at around 4 a.m., hours before the present items were to be shared, witnesses said, mentioning that some had been waiting since the previous night.
“The method they were rushing to go into, some people were falling and a few of them were old,” Loveth Inyang, a witness. Inyang stated he handled to rescue one baby as his mom struggled in the rise.
Three individuals died in a comparable crush later in the southeastern Anambra state’s Okija town at a fundraiser arranged by a philanthropist, the state police said.
“The event had actually not even started when the rush began,” police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga stated. There might be more deaths taped as officers examine the occurrence, he stated.
Viral footage that seemed from the Abuja scene showed lifeless bodies resting on the ground as people shouted for help. A few of the injured have been treated and released while others continue to get healthcare, police stated.
The church canceled the fundraiser with bags of rice and clothing items still set up within the properties.
As the church held a wedding after the crowd was evacuated, the misery and sadness remained palpable even as friends and families gathered for wedding pictures.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu expressed his sympathy with the victims’ families and asked states and relevant authorities to implement strict crowd control measures.
The current stampedes in Nigeria have raised concerns about precaution in such occasions. Several children were killed on Wednesday this week when a regional structure organized a well-attended funfair to distribute present items and food to kids in southwestern Oyo state.
After the newest catastrophe, the cops in Abuja revealed that prior consent must be obtained before such fundraiser are organized.
The existing financial hardship under Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who guaranteed “restored hope” when he was sworn into office in May 2023, is blamed on rising inflation that is at a 28-year high and the government ´ s financial policies that have pressed the local currency to record low versus the dollar.
Frustration over the cost-of-living crisis has actually caused mass demonstrations in recent months. In August, at least 20 individuals were shot dead and hundreds of others were detained at demonstrations demanding much better and jobs for youths.
